Allusion

My son has a pet cockroach, and just now, I was putting part of an apple in his cage to feed him. But the apple slipped a bit and bonked him on the back.

The question: Of what did this remind me?

Is it Gregor? Because that is what it reminds me of...

Yup. Metamorphosing at casa GEW. Which room can you afford to lose though?

WHY DOES YOUR SON HAVE A COCKROACH PET?

Ink, Yup! Hard not to think of it, right? The image of that apple in Gregor's back is lodged in my mind like, well, that apple in Gregor's back.

lkl, None! Hissy (that's the cockroach) lives in the laundry room, but I'm not giving that up!

Harker, I asked him, and this is what he said: "This is not the kind that you think of that live in people's houses. It's a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. And I like cockroaches because they pretty much have their own little bug world that we don't pay attention to at all, and I like to hold it because it's cute."

Does that clarify the matter? (We used to have two, but Hissy's mate died. That was a sad day.)

The first time I read "The Metamorphosis," I had no idea how many times someone would reference it in the future. Has turned out to be quite a lot. And I love to teach it because then I know there are more people will have that experience.

It's kind of like a multi-level-Kafka deal. ;)

Anyway, "Hissy" is a cute name, it must be said.

I am late to this party, but yes, insta-Gregor imagery. I didn't know Hissy had had a mate!
