It's the Little Things

Remember the hundreds of bugs my son gathered while camping (after losing the original cool bug and then being told by me, "Easy come, easy go")? Okay, so it wasn't "hundreds," but he did bring home quite a few in a little jar. Well, they looked like this:

I'll give you two guesses as to what happened to these bugs. Amazingly, the boy actually predicted the results. I thought he was just thinking wishful thoughts, but I'll be damned if he wasn't right.

Did they turn into butterflies? No, that doesn't sound right...

What happened?

Oh, I am so curious. I've never seen a bug like that, though it sort of looks like a cross between a lightning bug and a hornet ...

I'm going to guess that it developed wings of some sort.

That was my guess, too, a butterfly? Not?

They turned into ladybugs. The little bugs were, in fact, ladybug larvae. They made tiny little chrysalises (chrysili?), and some of them were even just laying on the bottom of the jar. I thought they were just dead bugs. My son said they were turning into ladybugs. He mentioned today that, when he was gathering the bugs, he saw the different-staged "ladies" hanging out around the area, so he inferred they were turning into ladybugs.

And did you know that when they emerge, they are bright yellow with no spots? Then the spots appear, and then they gradually turn red.

Oooh, that's cool! I was thinking they were going to turn into something much creepier, like mini Jeff Goldblums (a la The Fly).
