Explaining Memorial Day

So, the kids had questions about what kind of holiday yesterday was. They seemed a bit confused that people were throwing around the word "holiday" without also throwing around candy and/or presents.

I didn't want to be too graphic or talk about death and war, especially to the almost-four-year-old, so I said, "Memorial Day is when we remember soldiers who protected our country."

And the almost-four-year-old promptly said, "And they died in the wars?"

Um, yeah. That's right.

Well, no need to be concerned about how the almost-four-year-old was going to take the death part ...

When the time comes I think I'm going with "it's the day America celebrates hot dogs and cold beer!"

AG(E)W - I think your response was fab and I think wee ones get more than we think they do.
No offense to baxie, but we celebrate WITH cold beer and hot dogs - because brave men and women died for us to have the freedom to so.

hopefully I can leave that tale to the pros...or maybe Uncle Timmy, the military history buff.

Although that's as likely to lead to a lecture on the Crimean War or the Black Hole of Calcutta as an exultation of our boys on Corregidor....
