Punctuation

My son (who is in first grade) is often praised for his artistic skills and for his engineering-like sensibilities. But today he received an award for his "understanding of the mechanics of writing." This award was triggered by his recently improved writing skills and his pronouncement in class that "a sentence in not a sentence without a period."

Tears of joy, people. Tears of joy.

Aw... I get that awesome feeling when my son (three-and-a-half years old) corrects his father. "It's lie down, daddy." (Meaning, not "lay" down.) Nice.

We have many reasons to be proud of the Boy. Today's award just adds to it. And in our pride, we need to include praise for his school, his teacher, and especially his awesome principal. They are just the best at re-enforcing the positive. Thank heavens for that school.

I wish your son could come and tutor some of the adults whose writing I often have the misfortune of editing.

Yes, I am indeed proud. And it is a great school. And I think I'll have the Boy teach a grammar lesson for my college students next term!
