We are back from Hawaii, and I will have a few pictures and more details soon.
The best part about getting home from Hawaii? The kids are on Hawaii time, and so they slept until 9:00am for the first time in their lives--two days in a row.
The worst part of getting home from Hawaii? We're not in Hawaii anymore.
Oh, and also, now it's time to face all of the chores/crap that have been waiting for us at home. Today, I'm starting to get my finances in order a la Suze Orman style. Despite the fact that she drives me bonkers, she gave some good basic advice in a recent issue of Oprah (the de-cluttering issue). So I went to Staples and bought a shredder, a fire-proof safe, and a file box*, and now it's time to sort, shred, and organize.
*And I bought a couple of pretty notebooks because, I mean really, I just can't resist pretty school supplies.

Welcome back! I also have jetlag from being on a plane for 24 hours twice last week. good grief.
I love love love Suze. Do you have her books? I have a few of them as pdf files - holler if you want me to email them to you. Now if only my stinking 401k would stop shrinking!!!grrrr!!!!

Oh, I know the pain of returning from vacation. I had a four night trip with my husband about a month ago, and I think it's taken until now to actually recover from the coming home part, the part of readjusting to the minutiae of daily life again. (I wrote about this.) I am also hoping to recover soon from the credit card bill. Ugh. The worst part of vacation is the damn credit card bill.
Now you can use the shredder for the ccard bill!
(Love the pretty supplies!)
SO's eye's bother me. So purposefully Buggy. High five for getting order in your personal life, though. And I've got that issue, I think--so I'm going to go read up. [And I am a total sucker for school supplies. With you.]
School supply shopping was one of my favorite events of the year when I was a kid. I still sneak down the stationery aisle at Target every so often even though I don't need anything, and as a general rule, I keep myself out of Staples. Their pen aisle is too tempting with all the fun colors and different kinds of ink ...
Suze Orman intimidates the hell out of me. Good for you for steeling yourself, despite her bonkers-inducing tendencies, to glean what's useful from her! I haven't read her books, but my parents (many years ago) ordered a financial organization kit she was giving away if you donated to PBS during their telethon. I think it's sitting in a closet somewhere ...
jc, oooo! Nice offer! I'll let you know. Right now, the tiny magazine article is enough for me to process.
Jana, I am so with you!
LKL, the bill or the card?
ging--one of my students noted (on an online ratings thing, which I shouldn't look at) that I have googly eyes. But I swear, I do not make them purposefully googly.
Oh, and CT: Yes, I am a sucker for school supplies. I've always loved the way the smell, along with all of the possibility they suggest! And, plus, when I was a kid, my mom wouldn't usually buy toys for me when we were out and about, but I could usually talk her into a pen or notepad. My crack.
What is it with academics -- we all love to buy school supplies! I guess it's either an occupational hazard or why we went into academia in the first place. :-)
First time commenter, enjoying the blog very much.
Your eyes are NOT googly. Suze O seems to be continually exercising her Eye Opening Muscle. It must get tired.
Ah, the beauty of fresh school supplies...welcome home!
Azulao, Sometimes I think it IS the cause, rather than the result. Thanks for commenting!
ginger--glad you don't think I'm googly.
TKW, The color! The smell! Love them.
Welcome back! I, too, do love a good stack of school supplies. This is the first year in a long time that I don't have an actual need to buy some. I might anyway - just to get a lift.
But more than anything, I am impressed that your kids have been sleeping so late. Perhaps it's worth the expense of a trip to Hawaii to get that much sleep!
Welcome home! Aloha!
Maybe you could play a Don Ho record or two as Hawaiian ambiance (do you remember his show back in the day)?
I can't go into any office supply or bookstore or paper store without spending some time looking at blank notebooks and folders. My mom, too. We used to laugh about having a paper fetish...
