I'm baaaccckkkk . . .

Back in the classroom that is.

Although I will miss the sabbatical terribly--Goodbye, sabbatical. I will miss you, and I'm sorry I didn't always give you my full attention--I was actually slightly excited to go to class today. I met with my Brit Lit survey class and saw a lot of familiar faces who have taken my classes before. Then, I went to my comp class where I'm trying some things that are new. I started by having them draft their first paper in response to the Lenny Kravitz line, "Love is gentle as a rose." They seem to have jumped in with both feet. I think I set good vibes for the classes. We'll see.

Lots of prep work to do. Soon, there will be lots of grading, too.

And now I'm trying to figure out when I'm going to get that conference paper finished. And the dissertation. And I still want to keep getting my 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

I want it all! Roarrrrr!

Good recommendations! You guys are WAY cooler than me. I've thought of "Love Stinks" and "The Rose" as potential follow-ups. Some quotations from Anais Nin, Corinthians, and some others that I'm forgetting right now. Shakespeare's Sonnet 116. And then some articles about the science of love. Should also maybe do Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love," but I don't want this first essay sequence to take us all the way into week ten (or 18).

Or maybe I do.

But keep those song recs coming! I want my students to think I'm hip to the latest tunes. I just don't think they'd be down with Lyle Lovett and Patty Griffin.

Now, time to logoff, turn on the Buffster, and have some port and chocolate. Later mates.

It sounds like the sabbatical did its job. You sound stoked to teach! Yay!

BTW--that Multiple Intelligences stuff might be helpful in figuring out how to get non-logical students to get logic stuff. And I kept thinking of your little guy when reading the Nature Smart chapter. :) He definitely inspired my little guy to search for more worms and slugs.

Janet Jackson "That's the way love goes"... like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire.

Taylor Swift "Love Story"... you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter.

Bon Jovi "You give love a bad name" ... shot through the heart and you're to blame.

*my ass is still wiggling*

Any chick who begins a class with Lenny Kravitz (who, I just have to say, shares top status with Jon Stewart in my 'Ultimate Man' category)can come eat Cheetos at my house any time.

jc--keep wiggling it, babe!

My rec: Release the Benatar: Love is a Battlefield...

Adam Ant: “Ridicule is nothing to be scared of”

Kansas: "All we are is dust in the wind"

Nirvana: "I feel stupid and contagious"

Cake: "With fingernails that shine like justice"

(Yeah, all of mine are old. I've lost track of the music scene...sniffle.)

Have fun in class! (Miss you too, vicarious sabbatical.)

No good song lines for you, but feeling pleased to recognize some of those suggested! I try to stay up on movies, though. If I can't use up to the minute references in Lit and Film, it's over!

Hee hee, this is great fun! I am totally stumped for music that's popular right now beyond what's already been suggested (I've been taking a several-months break from listening to the radio because the channels here are so repetitive). What about the mash-up from Moulin Rouge, though? I think it's called "Elephant Love Medley." Link to lyrics here.

Ooh, the science of love, I can't wait to hear what you're going to give your students to read for that part of the course :)
